Education Issues
Being a parent of a child with cerebral palsy can mean a lot of things – extra doctor visits, extra medical bills, extra worrying, and extra experiences. Like any other parent, you will want to ensure that your child receives a full and well-rounded education. Unlike other parents however, as a parent of a child with cerebral palsy, you must take extra steps to ensure this education.

For instance, before your child even begins his or her education and throughout his or her academic career, he must have the necessary evaluations performed to measure his aptitude and where he will be best suited for his education. You will also need to know about Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP), Individualized Educational Plans (IEP), and Individualized Habilitation Plans (IHP) and how you can make sure that these plans are best suited to your child’s needs.

At some point, you will need to make a decision about whether or not you want your child to attend a Special Education school, or a regular "mainstream" school. And of course, you must be well-versed in the legal matters that affect your child and her right to an education which are primarily established by the Individuals with Disabilities Act. All of these issues regarding cerebral palsy and education will be covered in the following section.
